Citizen Police Academy
The Sierra Vista Police Department holds a Citizen Police Academy, which generally starts in August, giving citizens an insider’s view of law enforcement operations. The class meets once a week, from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., for twelve consecutive weeks. There is no cost to attendees.
The program promotes police/community relations and is designed to give citizens a better understanding of law enforcement. The program is intended for citizens of all backgrounds and occupations.

The next Citizen Police Academy will begin on Aug. 8, 2024. Applications must be submitted by Friday, June 7.
Class size is limited to 25 students and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. If a class is filled, the applicant may be placed on a waiting list. In order to graduate, the student must have no more than three absences, have participated in all hands-on exercises, exemplified conduct conducive to the goals of the Academy, and completed a minimum of one four-hour ride-along with an on-duty Sierra Vista Police officer.
To qualify for acceptance into the Citizen Police Academy, the applicant must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Live and/or work in the greater Sierra Vista area
- Have no prior convictions
- Have no misdemeanor convictions involving violence or weapons
- Have no misdemeanor arrests within 6 months prior to their applications.
Exceptions will be reviewed on an individual basis. There is no fee for the Academy.
After the submission of the information and application packet, the Police Department will conduct a limited background investigation. If accepted, the applicant will be notified by mail of their placement in the class.
